Global Course Manila Language Training ④

2026.10.27

On Thursday, October 22nd, students continued with classes scheduled at De La Salle University and learned about English communication and Philippine culture.

In the “Culture and Society” class, students learned about the history of the Philippine flag and the meanings of the colors and symbols depicted in it. Students discovered how the design of the flag reflects the history and values that the Philippines cherishes, and many gained new insights. Subsequently, students took on the task of designing their own original flags and presenting in English the meanings and thoughts they embedded in them. This became an opportunity to consider the significance of national flags while developing the ability to express their own ideas in English.

In one-on-one lessons, students worked on speaking and writing tasks together with Philippine English instructors. Each student receives individual instruction in two speaking sessions and one writing session, receiving guidance and feedback tailored to their individual level of understanding and challenges. Some students still feel uncertain about the one-on-one format of instruction, which is rarely experienced in Japan, but with support from instructors, they are steadily working toward improving their English proficiency. With the final level test coming next week, they are engaging in daily learning with enthusiasm.

In small-group classes, students conducted a scavenger hunt (exploratory activity) within the university campus. Students worked in pairs and, while asking local students for directions in English, challenged themselves to locate four designated buildings on campus. Given that the campus is spacious and populated by university students as well as elementary and middle school students, international students, and various other people, there were moments of initial confusion. Nevertheless, with the cooperation of De La Salle University students and staff, they successfully completed the task. By actually using English outside the classroom and communicating with people they were meeting for the first time, they gained valuable experience in acquiring practical English skills.

On this day as well, students spent a fulfilling day through various classes and activities. While some students are not yet accustomed to communicating in English or to the local learning environment, they are gradually adapting to life at the university and the flow of classes.

The following day, a sports festival is scheduled where students are expected to interact with De La Salle University students and faculty. In addition to learning in the classroom, through interactions via sports, I believe they will absorb much more.
