Day 3 of the UK Study Tour (November 1st): The students in the Advanced Course visited the University of Sussex, a comprehensive university located near Brighton in East Sussex.
The University of Sussex is particularly highly regarded worldwide in the field of development studies. We have graduates from our school who have gone on to study there, making it a destination of high interest for our students as they consider their future career paths.
First, we received an explanation about ISC (International Study Centre), a pre-university education institution for international students, and then participated in a campus tour. The students were greatly impressed by the expansive campus with its impressive buildings, the artistically rich architectural designs, and the beautiful appearance of Meeting House. During breaks in the tour, students could be seen taking photographs as they wished.
Lunch was taken at a food court within the campus. Students selected menus of their choice and challenged themselves to order in English. They enjoyed their meal in a warm, friendly atmosphere with their classmates, experiencing a glimpse of daily life at an overseas university.
In the afternoon, we moved to a classroom where we heard from a Japanese student currently studying at the university, who spoke about classes, academic departments, university life, and future career plans. The firsthand experiences of a senior student actually studying at an overseas university provided significant motivation for our students and made the prospect of studying at a foreign university feel much more accessible.
We then attended a lecture by a professor of Global Studies. It was a valuable time to experience specialized learning at the university level and to learn how to approach global-scale issues from multiple perspectives and work toward their solutions.
Through this university visit, our students deepened their understanding of the learning environment and university life at overseas institutions, and gained the opportunity to reflect on their own futures and career paths. It was a meaningful day in which they looked toward the world and broadened the possibilities for themselves.
