First-Year Students Attended the Arts Appreciation Event

2026.11.01

On Friday, October 30th, we held an arts appreciation event for first-year students.

This year as well, at Salvia Hall in the Tsurumi Ward Citizens’ Cultural Center, we enjoyed a performance of Japanese traditional instruments by the Japanese drum group “Sai-sai-“.

“Sai-sai-” is an all-male Japanese drum ensemble that was formed as a circle at the University of Tokyo. After graduating from university, the members initially found employment at a general company, but without abandoning their dreams, they resigned in 2013 and began their activities as professionals.

The performances, which featured various Japanese traditional instruments including Japanese drums, bamboo flutes, noh flutes, and cymbals, were characterized by both power and delicacy, captivating the students. Even familiar melodies took on a fresh resonance through the unique timbres of Japanese instruments, and the students discovered new attractions in Japan’s traditional music.

During the intermissions, students also had the opportunity to experience playing Japanese drums themselves. Representative students took the stage and, wielding drumsticks, played the drums with forceful energy, eliciting enthusiastic applause from the audience and creating a warm atmosphere.

While the students listened intently to the performances, there were also moments when the entire venue came together in excitement, and they thoroughly enjoyed the powerful impact of the Japanese drums and the beautiful sounds of the traditional instruments.

This arts appreciation event provided a valuable opportunity for students to become familiar with Japan’s traditional music and to feel firsthand its depth and charm.
